Surrealist Art started by Andre Breton and popularised by artists like Salvador Dali, Joan Miro and Max Ernst involves painting of imaginary fantastic images arising in the artist’s sub-conscious mind. The movement was influenced by the psychoanalysis theories of Sigmund Freud.

Surrealist art has influenced and inspired many new schools of art, like Magic realism and Pseudo Realism. Paul Cadmus, Ivan Albright, Allex Colville, all from America, are the principal proponents of Magic realism. But Magic realism gained more popularity as a literary style as in the works of Gabriel Garcia Marquez and Jorge Luis Borges.

Salvador Dali: the most famous surrealist of all times

Salvador Dali

Alex Colville: one of fathers of magic realism

Pseudo-realism is a more recent style, where the realistic subjects are treated with a measure of exaggeration in fantastic color-scheme. The style which was coined in reference to modern-day films with heavy special effects that blurs the difference between realism and fantasy was later grafted into the Art World

Alex Colville

In India, Devajyoti Ray and Manjit Bawa’s works are overtly pseudo-realistic while those of Sunil Das and Bikash Bhattacharya and the new graphic and digital works of Bose Krishnamachari show elements of both pseudo and surrealism
