The word pseudo-realism
was coined in reference to the 21st century movies with improvised
special effect which makes fantasies look real on screen. |
|
The idea is also used in
theatre and modern day photography but the idea is quite new in the
field of Art. Pseudo-realist Artists
depict realistic
everyday scenes or pure fantasies in
abstract
colour schemes and meaningless geometric shapes. Though
approached in an abstract
manner, the scenes in pseudo-realistic
works remain comprehendible. |

Pseudo-realism is often compared to two other very popular styles of
Surrealism and
Magic realism. The difference between the
first two is that while in Pseudo-realism the subject matter of Art
remains realistic, the colour scheme and the whole approach remains
fantastic, in
surrealism, the approach remains
realistic
but the subject matter often delves into the absurd. |

Magic Realism Alex Colville |
|
|
Magic realism is more popular as a literary style
as can be seen in the literary works of Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Salman
Rushdie and others. It was grafted into the field of Art by mostly
American Artists like
Alex Colville and George Bellows.
Erotic and gay Art
of famous American Artists Paul Cadmus also falls into this
category. In Art of this genre,
realistic elements are shown with a touch of fantasty and
exegerrated overtones.

Pseudo realistic art Devajyoti Ray |
|
 |
|
Pseudo-realism is a new
style and in India it is yet to gain popularity. However there are
already a few artists who are experimenting with the idea, among whom
Devajyoti Ray is significant. In Ray’s works, bold colors akin to
fauvist art or Gond
tribal paintings are put flatly and yet
they bring forth a three dimensional
realistic effect.
